French and English runners-up from the 2016/17 season, Paris-Saint Germain and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively, have huge plans heading into the new domestic campaigns.
Having both been pegged down to the
second spot in their leagues, PSG and Tottenham are hoping to make a
step forward but they are both well aware it will be a tough challenge.
Therefore, a strong preseason stands as a
prerequisite for both Unai Emery and Mauricio Pochettino who have a lot
to prove in 2017/18 campaign.
Paris Saint-Germain
French League Cup winners, French Super
Cup and Coupe de France holders arrive to the United States as winners
of the tournament’s edition from two years ago and there is no doubt Les
Parisiens will be motivated to repeat the feat.
The PSG’s ICC campaign kicks off with a game against AS Roma on 19 July at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, for which the tickets can be purchased right here.
The game at Comerica Park will be the first-ever soccer/football match
to be played at this stadium and PSG are happy to make history in
Michigan. Unai Emery has last week announced his full International
Champions Cup roster which, as predicted, includes all of the club’s
biggest stars. The two latest arrivals – defenders Dani Alves and Yuri
Berchiche – have been included on the squad list and could be given
their first shot at impressing their new employers. Javier Pastore
travelled with the squad despite the intensified rumours regarding his
future at the club. Inter Milan are thought to be keeping a keen eye on
the winger, who has last week moved on to deny PSG exit talks. The
Parisians’ rivals Tottenham Hotspur were also said to be in for the
Argentina international who was the first big-name player to be added by
the new owners and who holds a special place in Nasser Al-Khelaifi’s
heart. Angel Di Maria is another PSG player linked with Inter Milan
move, but former Real Madrid and Manchester United star’s wages have effectively ruled out the Serie A side from the running for his signature.
Team News
Unai Emery left Serge Aurier, Hatem Ben
Arfa and Gregorz Krychowiak out of the squad for the club’s US tour as
all three players face uncertain future at Paris Saint-Germain.
Julian Draxler was another omission, but
that’s only because the German star has been granted extra leave
following the German international’s Confederations Cup success in
Russia earlier this summer.
Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspur arrive to the
International Champions Cup on the back of their impressive performances
and results over the past two seasons which helped the club raise its
international profile to a whole new level.
The Spurs are travelling to the United
States as one of Europe’s big boys and are expected to shine against
some of the continent’s more illustrious opponents. Mauricio
Pochettino’s charges are kicking off preparations for what fans hope
will be their third-time lucky attempt at a Premier League title and are
set to kick it off with a high-profile match against a respected French
side. The Spurs’ fans are feeling a bit anxious as Tottenham are yet to
bolster their ranks. While Premier League big guns are busy adding
quality signings to their squads, Tottenham remain quiet. What’s more
they ended up selling one of their key men last season Kyle Walker who
joined Manchester City
on a €51 million deal, which made the right-back the most expensive
English player in the history of the game. Mauricio Pochettino could yet
face the biggest test this summer as La Liga giants Barcelona are
believed to be preparing a bid for Dele Alli, who is seen as an
alternative for PSG playmaker Marco Verratti Barcelona are still trying to buy.
Team News
Pochettino is undeterred in his
preparations for the new season and is expected to take all of his
first-team stars to the United States. Clinton Njie will not be among
those traveling to the US as the French forward has reached an agreement
with Marseille.
The forthcoming summer will be a huge
test for Harry Kane and his teammates, most of which are on the radar of
Europe’s biggest sides. Eric Dier is another one of the players linked
with a Spurs exit, while Mateo Kovacic, Ross Barkley and Suso are those
linked with Tottenham arrival.
Conclusion
Paris Saint-Germain will go head to head
with exciting Tottenham squad determined to make most of their first
game of the International Champions Cup. We expect to see an
openly-contested clash as the Spurs will also be keen to make an
impression on the United States crowd which can purchase the tickets for the game right here.
